ABOUT THE AUTHOR
William Douglas- He was born in the year of 1898 in the city Minnesota. He was a good friend of Franklin D. Roosevelt. As well as he was his adviser also. He had got double degree in graduation first in English and Economic. After graduating he spent two years teaching high school in Yakima. When he got tired of this and decided to pursue a legal career. Douglas was a leading advocate of individual rights. He retired in 1975 and died in 1980 . This present story is an autobiographical, in this story he reveals how as a young boy

11. What is the “misadventure” that William Douglas speaks about?
Ans:- When William Douglas was ten or eleven years old ,he
was trying to learn swimming with the help of his water wings. One day when he
was sitting alone on the side of the pool and waiting for another boy to come,
a big bruiser boy come and pick him up and threw him into nine feet deep water
. He tried to come out of water, but he failed. He survived somehow this is the
misadventure that William Douglas speaks about.
22. What were the series
of emotion and fears that Douglas experienced when he was thrown into
the pool? What plans did make to come to the surface?
Ans:- There was series of emotion and fears that Douglas
experienced when he was thrown into the
pool. He was quiet frightened. When he was going under water those nine feet
were more like ninety feet. He had some plane also but before touched the
bottom his lungs were ready to brust.
When he was under water he made a plane to come to the surface. His
plane was to hit the bottom as he would touch it . But his plane could not
success as he imagined.
33. How did this experience effect him?
Ans:- This experience effected him greatly after several hour later he walked home he was weak and trembling. He could not that night. There was a haunting fear in his heart. The slightest exertion made him upset. He was as frightened as he never went back to the pool.
44. Why was Douglas determined to get
over his fear of water?
Ans:- Douglas
was determined to get over his fear of water because this fear of water had
deprived him from many things. It had ruined his all joy related to water. He
was unable to enjoy in water. It had deprived him of the joy of boating and swimming and fishing. He used every way
to overcome this fear of water but he
could not get success. It had held him firmly in its grip . There was a great
terror in his heart. He wanted to come out this fear at any cost because due to
this fear of water he was unable to enjoy fishing, boating, canoeing and
swimming.
55. How did the instructor “build a
swimmer” out of Douglas?
Ans:-
Douglas used every way that he knew to overcome his fear of water but this fear
of water held him firmly in its grip. When he could not get success finally one
October he decided to get and instructor and learn to swim. The instructor took
him in a swimming pool and put a belt around him. The instructor attached a rope to the belt went through a pulley that
ran on an over head cable . The instructor held on to the end of the rope.
Douglas went back and forth across the
pool. He practiced hour after hour day after day and week after week.
The instructor taught him every
way of swimming . After that the instructor taught him how to put his face
under water and how to raise his nose out of water and how to inhale and
exhale. Thus the instructor build a swimmer out of Douglas.
66. How did Douglas make sure that he
conquered the old-terror?
Ans:- When Douglas learned to swim, he swam across the pool. But he was not satisfied. He went to warm lake and swam into it finally he realized that he had conquered the old-terror.

Ans:- When
he was three or four years old his father took him to the beach of California.
They were standing in the surf. Douglas was hanging on to his father, yet the
waves knocked him down and swept over him. He was buried in water his breath
was gone. He was frightened but his father laughed. From that day there was a
great terror in his heart.

Ans:- When
Douglas was ten or eleven years old he decided to learn swimming. He went to
aswimming pool with a pair of water wings.

Ans:- One
day Douglas went to the swimming pool when no one was there. He was timid about
going in alone. So, he sat a side the pool. After sometime a young boy come there.
He yelled and tossed him into the deep end. He was nearly drowned in swimming
pool.

come to the surface?
Ans:- When
he was tossed into the deep end, he landed in sitting position and went at once
to the bottom. Going under water he made a plane as soon as his hite the
bottom. He would make a big jump and
come to the surface. After that he would lieflat on it and paddle to the edge
of the pool.
